This visit came in response to the invitation of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, after his visit to Turkey and the capital, Ankara, last month, and his affirmation of his country's keenness to strengthen the partnership with Turkey during the coming period. Erdogan's visit to the UAE is his first visit in nearly ten years, as his last visit was in February 2013 and he was prime minister at the time, and this visit will last for two days. This visit comes as part of diplomatic initiatives to improve relations between the two countries, after they were completely at odds over most regional files.

During this meeting, Turkey and the UAE signed 13 agreements in various investment fields worth billions of dollars, as follows:

  • Health and medical sciences
  • Climate action
  • Industry and advanced technology
  • Cultural cooperation
  • Agricultural cooperation

A delegation-level meeting was held between the two countries, in the presence of President Erdogan and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

A joint statement was signed regarding the start of negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between them, and a letter of intent regarding the start of cooperation meetings in the field of defense industries.

The Turkish president had said in a press conference held on Monday, February 14, at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, before heading to the UAE, that cooperation between Turkey and the UAE is important for the stability of the whole region, adding that the security and stability of the Gulf states is part of his country's security, As Turkey searches for new foreign investment, the UAE faces a growing security threat from the Houthis in Yemen. "We will take the necessary steps to restore relations to the level they deserve," he added.

He also explained that relations between the two countries have entered a new phase with the visit of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed to Ankara last November.

He pointed to Turkey's strong condemnation of the attacks on Abu Dhabi last January, stressing his country's stand against all forms of terrorism. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed his thanks and appreciation for "the friendly position of Turkey."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is accompanied during this visit by Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, Finance Minister Nuruddin Nebti, Trade Minister Mehmet Muş, and a number of other ministers.

Anadolu Agency reported that President Erdogan will inaugurate the Turkish National Day at the "Expo Dubai" and meet a number of businessmen.

Turkey and the UAE concluded an agreement last month, during the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's visit to Ankara, to exchange currencies worth nearly five billion dollars in the local currencies of the two countries.

Erdogan said that during his visit, Turkey and the UAE would seek to boost bilateral trade and search for opportunities in "the complementary structures of the two countries' economies."

Agreements between Turkey and the UAE

Turkish sources said that the two countries are expected to start formal negotiations on huge trade agreements and to sign memoranda of understanding in the areas of climate, industry, advanced technology, health, and agriculture.

These sources added that the two parties are also expected to sign a letter of intent to start cooperation meetings in the defense industry sector, as well as a memorandum of understanding on investment cooperation.

During the visit of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi to Turkey, a ten billion dollar fund was established to support investments in Turkey, in a move that came after the Turkish lira recorded a significant decline against the dollar since late 2021.

These agreements laid the foundations for a new and major launch of the economic and trade partnership between the two countries and doubled the volume of Emirati-Turkish trade exchange.

Turkey, which is at odds with a number of powers in the region as well as with its Western allies on various issues, has started a campaign to improve its relations since last year.
