In the western suburbs of Istanbul on the European side of the Sea of Marmara, is the magical district and municipality of Büyükçekmece. Büyükçekmece is one of the most contemporary locations in European Istanbul. It contains a total of 39 districts. All the 39 districts are governed by independent municipalities. 

 

History of the Büyükçekmece district: 

Büyükçekmece neighborhood is found in Istanbul's European District and the area is adjacent to the Marmara Sea's coast. The region of the Büyükçekmece district was uninhabited farmland and forest at the start of the Ottoman era. Büyükçekmece district was still quite rural in the early years of the Turkish Republic as well. With a sandy shoreline and a lengthy seafront, the region was a well-liked getaway spot for day trips and weekend getaways.

People used to travel to Buyukcekmece for activities like fishing, crabbing, and beach days up until the 1960s. Beginning in the 1960s, Büyükçekmece started to be a more industrialized area. Büyükçekmece neighborhood features Istanbul's longest pedestrian walkway along the seaside. The 26-kilometer-long, breathtaking shoreline that makes Büyükçekmece famous is a popular summertime destination for locals and foreigners. Numerous dining establishments, tea gardens, bars, and recreation spaces can be found along the beach to allow you to fully enjoy the experience. 

 

  1. Büyükçekmece Lake

Büyükçekmece Lake is located where the Karasu stream meets the Sea of Marmara. There is no longer a connection between the lake and the Sea of Marmara because the stream was dammed to make a drinking water reservoir. The lake is 7 km long, 2 km wide, and has a surface area of over 29 km2. The lake's maximum depth is 8.6 meters, however for much of its surface, the water doesn't go deeper than 50 cm.

 

  1. Mimar Sinan’s famous bridge

The iconic bridge by Mimar Sinan is one of his most well-known creations. The bridge serves as the emblem of Büyükçekmece. It was constructed between the Büyükçekmece Lake and the Sea of Marmara. Suleyman the Magnificent gave the go-ahead to build the bridge before beginning his Szigetvar campaign. Mimar Sinan, under his direction, with a large team of stonemasons and carpenters began building the structure in 1566. Ruler Selim II used it upon his return to Istanbul as the new sultan, so it was finished in 1567. The bridge was called the “Four Brothers” and was formed by adding four separate bridges of different sizes and lengths to together. The masterpiece of engineering is 635 meters long and 7 meters wide. The poetical text on the inscription of the bridge belongs to the Poet Hüdai. The original signature of Sinan on the bridge was stolen. During the restoration in 1970 a similar signature was formed in place of the original.

 

  1.  The Kulturpark 

The historical bridge, caravanserai, mosques, and fountain by Mimar Sinan are all situated within the 200.000 m2 named Kulturpark. The park, which was initially created for the Ottoman Empire's 700th founding anniversary celebrations, is now used for performing arts and cultural events. In addition to ancient buildings, the complex also includes a museum, a 5,000-seat amphitheater, sports facilities, residential sections, cafes, and restaurants. There are a few small regional eateries (yöresel evler) in the neighborhood that serve local cuisine. Among them, House of Mersin, Zigana, and Kbrs are well-liked.

 

  1. Atatürk Culture Center 

Atatürk Culture Center is the biggest cultural complex of Turkey and satisfies a large part of the cultural needs of Istanbul. 

 

  1. Tüyap Fair and Congress Center

They are the primary location for all significant occasions, including trade displays, exhibits, congresses, and seminars. The complex has a total area of 8,000 m2, 11 conference halls with a range of capacities, and around 42,000 m2 of exhibition space distributed among 10 halls. Large convertible halls, global-standard utility infrastructure, wi-fi and internet access, a 10,000 m2 social area with full air conditioning, 7 cafeterias and restaurants, catering capabilities, and many more special features are also present.
